Lawrie Skolrood, Deputy Chief of Vernon Fire-Rescue Services, told us that his members are working hard to educate everyone about the benefits of smoke alarms, in response to a call to action by the BC Fire Service.  In 11,000 residential fires in BC, between 2006-11, nearly 70% of homes had no functional alarms!  These devices could reduce fire related deaths by 32%.  Lawrie thanked us for our support & participation in checking & installing smoke alarms in several local mobile home parks, adding that prevention is all about changing behavior.  Sensors in both wired & battery operated alarms have a life-span of about 10 years.  A combination of both ionization & photo sensitive alarms gives best protection.
